The Day of Remembrance in a Regressing World

Honouring memories amidst a world losing its way

As the world observes the Day of Remembrance, we are compelled to reflect on the fundamental values that shaped our collective promise of “never again.” Yet, those very promises seem to unravel, as echoes of the past resurface to haunt contemporary society. In a world increasingly adrift, reflecting on history is not just an act of honour but a vital lens for understanding present challenges.

In reality, it seems that many have never opened a history book. Otherwise, how can one explain the dangerous choices being made—choices whose outcomes and consequences are easily predictable?

Reflecting on the past to understand our present challenges

As we listen to the words of the last Holocaust survivors, we cannot help but wonder: how is it possible that we fail to recognise similar patterns in our own time? How can we stand by and accept such acts of cruelty?

Consider the troubling path of Israel, a nation that has shifted from being oppressed to becoming an oppressor. The rise of a far-right government has led to the devastating destruction of Gaza. And the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Also, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not attend the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation, despite Poland’s assurance it won’t enforce an ICC arrest warrant against him. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza. This effectively bars them from 123 countries.

The year 2025 begins with harrowing scenes, including a shocking image of immigrant deportations following Trump’s re-election. Numbed by our screens, we scroll past these horrors as though they belong to a distant reality. This detachment, born from digital anaesthesia, allows us to tolerate the intolerable. Always ready to move on to the next selfie.

The Day of Remembrance, amidst the fascist and Nazi resurgence taking hold in the world, demands profound reflection. How have we allowed the lessons of the past to fade into apathy? Have we become so consumed by convenience and distraction that we fail to see history repeating itself before our eyes?

If remembrance is to mean anything, it must compel us to reject complicity, challenge rising oppression, and stand firm in the face of hatred. Without this commitment, remembrance becomes hollow—a mere ritual divorced from its purpose.

The echoes of history grow louder. Will we listen and act, or will we allow silence to become our legacy?
