The End Of Fur Farming in Italy

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A step towards banning animal abuse

Good news: it’s the end of fur farming in Italy. Yes, we’ll say it again: Italy has shut down fur farming.

Animal killing for fur production has been banned in Italy. Despite profit and vanity, every now and then, an ethical choice prevails.

It is a fact we do not need fur to warm our bodies anymore. And we have known it for a long time. Killing animals for the sole purpose of garnishing our clothing and accessories has completely lost its sense in our modern society. We are not primitives, and the era of the ’50s divas is gone. Furthermore, there are countless alternatives to keep the body warm when it’s cold or embellish our garments, all while avoiding that senseless cruelty.

So finally, in Italy too, the Government has passed a law to ban this horrendous practice. As of January 2022, the ban on fur farming, including the breeding and killing of minks, foxes, raccoons, chinchillas, and other animals for their fur, is officially in place in Italy. As a result, mink farms will be closed within six months.

Not all evil leads to harm

When the pandemic struck, many fur farms in the Netherlands reported numerous cases of Covid-19. It was soon revealed that minks were spreading the virus due to their heightened sensitivity to it. They could be infected and then transmit the virus in a mutated form, posing a significant risk to public health. Naturally, this discovery played a key role in the decision to close fur farming.

Many countries in Europe have already moved or are moving in that direction. But, even if they all banned fur production, it’s still possible to commercialise fur items everywhere. What’s the point? It is obvious that someone will benefit from this situation. And that “someone” is China.

The end of fur farming in Italy marks significant progress. This law is one step forward. However, banning fur farming is not enough. To solve this issue, a ban on commercialising fur items must follow.

Perpetrating animal abuse is a cruel practice – definitely NOT a choice #formodernhumans

Anmi jewellery: a shared vision of fashion

Shop small and independent represents thoughtful choices to reclaim a sense of value. For you, but for us too. Indeed, supporting similar activities means being aligned. And sharing a vision of the world we want to live in. We contribute to defining the world by voting with our pockets. How we spend our money or don’t spend it at all – which in many cases would be great – shapes the world. And we do it all together.

For instance, we could argue against overconsumption and then offer you the same brands that thrive on that production model. Instead, we prefer to do our own research and find value outside the beaten path. In fact, consistency is a core value for us, which is why we seek out uniqueness.

Anmi: a brand with a fascinating background

Thinking about jewellery, the idea of supporting Anmi totally resonated with us, with the new path we have undertaken. An Italian brand located near the magical Pompeii, the ancient Roman city in Campania, close to Naples and Vesuvius. A designer with a long history in the fashion field, between Italy and France.

Exploring the Anmi archive to assemble unique pieces of jewellery was fascinating and modern at the same time. It felt like going through a process and realising that the time was ready. Sometimes, we would even puse, because it made sense in the moment – yet always with the intention of taking a different direction.

The archive is vast, and what once was considered a fashion leftover regained its value fulfilling the desire for uniqueness. In this line, the concept of asymmetry stands out. Moreover, the packaging is minimal on purpose.

Being mindful of your consumption doesn’t mean “buy nothing” at all. It’s about making intentional, conscious choices.

Made in Japan by Plantation1982, this stylish accessory is crafted from recycled PET bottles.

Although made with oil, natural gas and raw materials, PET is 100% recyclable. Ok, the starting point is oil, and it would be better to find other materials. But at least, the flip side is reasonable.

Since waste does not disappear, recycling materials is a meaningful way to reduce our impact on the planet.

From Quantity to Quality

What will it take to spark the shift?

When will the paradigm shift from quantity to quality? Or, the question should be, what else do we need to see in order to make this change happen?

People don’t consider shifting towards a conscious lifestyle because they are too ingrained in their old habits. But perhaps, those who are in this position will be forced to readapt somehow quite soon.

Why?
Difficulties in finding raw materials and supply chain shortages are now a reality. Indeed, one of the side effects of the pandemic was the sharp rise in raw material prices. Consequently, final product prices are getting much higher. It is already happening in the construction field, energy, gas. And it’s impacting fashion, too.

Therefore, caring more about what and how we consume will be a necessity.

Pointing feet - inspiring from quantity to quality attitude

Low-impact lifestyle: quality, not quantity

What can we do?
Each of us has an impact on the environment. Even if corporate giants arm-in-arm with marketing have shaped the world for us, they can’t make it without our active participation. And the role we play is revealed precisely by how and what we consume.

Since we do not like to wait for change to happen, we choose with our minds what kind of world we want to live in, so we act. Also, we hold ourselves accountable for the choices we make.

Why buy less but better quality?
It is a long-term strategy. You will buy garments that last. Things you will wear for a lifetime, not items to discard after a couple of washings. Same for any other item we use in our everyday life.

This radical shift of perspective from quantity to quality is about educating ourselves to find pleasure in how things are made, not in the simple act of buying. Finally, this alternative lifestyle will reduce our impact on the planet.

So, make it a conscious choice now rather than a forced decision when it’s too late.
